Saturday Academy

Saturday academy:

Saturday Academy: October – May. Join BEAM for the 2023-2024 academic year as we explore a new STEM career each month with our industry partners.

ENROLLMENT

Registration for the 2023-2024 season is open!

Students 9 through 12

Will meet on the first Saturday of each month on starting October 2nd from 10am to noon at Diefendorf Hall UB South (located across from VA hospital Off Bailey).

The Engineers of the Future activity utilizes hands-on Engineering demonstration taught by engineering mentors from BEAM partner companies and include University of Buffalo Engineering students in a supporting role. Each month will have a distinct engineering theme, and during a single Saturday Academy, students will interact with different companies and multiple engineers/scientists working in a similar area. Multiple sessions are designed to keep groups small for more interactions and better understanding. Junior and senior students will be able to hear from College students about planning for their college life—everything from writing essays for scholarship to student life will be covered.

Also available this year is the Women in Engineering Program. Under the direction of female engineers, the team will design a hands-on engineering activity that addresses a specific environmental or economic community need.

Students 5 through 8

Will meet on the first and third Saturday of each month on starting October 2nd from 10am to noon at Diefendorf Hall UB South (located across from VA hospital Off Bailey).

The Creative Building activity utilizes LEGO Mindstorms kits to engage middle school students. Lego Mindstorms kits provide hands-on experiences that stimulate communication, creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking skills. The Lego System includes LEGO® bricks, coding tools, and supporting lesson plans that ignite the middle school students’  natural curiosity and sharpens their scientific inquiry, engineering design, and data analysis skills—so they can succeed in their STEM classes today and realize their full potential as digital citizens and leaders tomorrow. This program will be overseen by two (2) engineering mentors who have a long relationship with BEAM.

Students K through 4

Will meet on the third Saturday of each month on starting October 16th from 10am to noon at Diefendorf Hall UB South (located across from VA hospital Off Bailey).

The Junior Engineers activity is a hands-on introduction to the engineering fields. This will be taught by a New York State certified Technology teacher utilizing kits that introduce young students to a variety of engineering fields through hands on “play.” Students will be provided their own individual kits each month to complete and take-home.  K- 4 must be accompanied by an adult.
